Welcome to this time traveling Tuesday where I'll fail to explain what an amazing vessel this Cliff Barnes album is. Released in April it instantly transports me to the start of the century when @pixelnated had created the best webpage in the known universe - Freakscene, the Dino / J audiovisual archive. I'm pretty sure that forum was what internet was supposed to be before Suckerberg et al skull-fucked it into the 82% hellscape it is today.
But I digress. Free Flyin' sounds like someone listened a fuck ton to Hand It Over and there reunion albums and then decided to record an answer. And the result is absolutely mega. Everyone who's ever liked guitars and melodies and things that are great should listen to this album. And then buy it, which is done by sending the guy an email. There's something reassuringly beautiful about the mechanics of that purchasing process. As I said some weeks back, trust the Finns. * The album is fucking amazing! "The PhD rocker: Cliff Barnes returns from a 20-year hiatus"
At the age of five, JP Jakonen got lost in the basement of the youth center in Pori while attending a concert by the local band Maddox. Big sister's boyfriend played bass in the band."They played mid-1980s street rock of their time. They played so loudly that I ran upstairs to cry because I was afraid I would go deaf."

"The [Free Flyin'] album was recorded during the corona years. I've played all the instruments myself, except for the trumpet, steel guitar and other rarer things. I collaborated with the other musicians online, and they have recorded their parts wherever they live: in India, Spain, Britain, the US, Zimbabwe and Australia," says songwriter and guitarist-singer JP Jakonen.
Kalle Grotenfelt of the legendary Finnish punk band consisting exclusively of farmers, Luonteri Surf, also plays the Farfisa organ on the album.
Cliff Barnes started in 1998 and gigged until 2003. The band released three demos and one vinyl EP on their own Southfork Records label. In 2023, along with the Free Flyin LP, a cassette collection of the band's early material will be released.

Cliff Barnes, who moved from Ulvila to Pori, has taken a 20-year break, but the corona years prompted the band's leader JP Jakonen to record the new album on his own and to play all the instruments except the pedal steel guitar, trumpet and other specialties. The album has several remotely recorded parts from musicians around the world. Kalle Grotenfelt of Luonteri Surf represents Eastern Finland with his gallant Farfisa organ.The Free Flyin' sound world is dominated by brutal, rough garage guitar, but the riffs and melodies amount to more than a single-note drone buzz. The singing offers a calm, clear reading over relentless riffing.
All in all, Cliff Barnes has a sound of ragged but dignified survival and a comprehensive mantra of the electronic sound world. Nothing unnecessary or trendy has been crammed into the reduced basic sound, but at the same time, the parts collected from around the world vary from synthetic sound waves to smaller tones and solos.
Jakonen's determination squeezes deliciously sweet aural charm out of the music with a seamless overall vision. In accordance with the definitions of horror films, the wolves of the subconscious howl in the basement of the psyche and the bats flutter in the rafters above. "Almost Had It" is a clever and attractive throw-in piece as the album's second track.

"The world changed, Cliff Barnes not so much"
Cliff Barnes from Pori too a hiatus of no less than 20 years, but now both the publishing and concert breaks have ended. The album, birthed during the Covid year, is largely made by singer/songwriter JP Jakonen on his own, with artists from different parts of the world providing something extra. And in the pandemic world, we didn't really fly across the continents by plane, but the cooperation took place over the internet. That's real free flyin' these days.The world has changed a lot in a couple of decades, but the winds of change don't come through in Cliff Barnes's music. Soulful indie rock is still the thing here, and for example, Almost Had It is not that far from even the more distorted stuff of the 70s. The sounds have a little rust and dirt over them, which is guaranteed to be a treat for some - and poison for others.
However, I think the carefully thought out and appropriately measured lack of hygiene on the sound side is a great asset and advantage of Cliff Barnes, because despite all the false references, Jakonen seems to belong to Neil Young's followers, at least to a certain extent. At the same time, we are making a break with the other extreme of the 90s, when sounds and tracks were laid out with big money and no consideration of the time used. Now you can feel the rock on your skin, as it squeezes like beads of sweat on your neck and makes your heart rate rise as if without noticing.
However, there is more to the music than you might guess at first glance. Turn to Evil has the bassoon and the trumpet, while GONE dares to slow down and let the notes fall down like heavy apples from the screaming tree. Everyone You'll Ever Know is the only track below the three-minute mark, and it's a model example of indie guitar rock.
The world changed, Cliff Barnes not so much, and change was not even needed in Cliff Barnes-land. Free Flyin' doesn't rank among the great rock albums, but it brings back something that at least I found myself missing

"Ulvilasta Poriin ajautunut Cliff Barnes on pitänyt 20 vuoden taukoa, mutta koronavuodet saivat bändin liiderin JP Jakosen äänittämään uutta albumia omin nokkinensa sekä soittamaan kaikki instrumentit lukuun ottamatta stilikaa, trumpettia ja muita erikoisuuksia. Levyllä on useita etäosuuksia muusikoilta ympäri maailman. Luonteri Surfin Kalle Grotenfelt edustaa Itä-Suomea uljailla Farfisa-uruillaan.
Free Flyin’ -soundimaailmaa hallitsee julmetun karhean garage-kitaran sahaus, mutta riffeissä ja melodioissa on yksitotista drone-särinää jäntevämpi riffipohja. Laulut ovat rauhallista, selkeää luentaa hellittämättömän runnomisen yllä.
Kaikkiaan Cliff Barnesilla vallitsee repaleisen mutta ryhdikkään selviytymisen soundi ja sähköisen äänimaailman kattava mantra. Mitään turhaa tai trendikästä ei pelkistettyyn perussoundiin haluta ahtaa, mutta samalla maailmalta kerätyt soitto-osuudet vaihtelevat synteettisistä äänivalleista pienempiin sävytyksiin ja sooloihin.
Jakosen määrätietoisuus puristaa musiikista sakeaa ydinmehua, nautittavan makeaa auraalista tenhoa sekä aukotonta kokonaisnäkemystä. Kauhuelokuvien määritelmien mukaisesti alitajunnan sudet ulvovat psyyken kellarissa ja ylhäällä tapulissa räpistelevät lepakot. Almost Had It on ripeydessään oiva ja houkuttava sisäänheittokipale albumin kakkosraitana."
"Maailma muuttui, Cliff Barnes ei"
"Porilainen Cliff Barnes otti pitkään happea, lopulta peräti 20 vuoden ajan, mutta nyt katkesi niin julkaisu- kuin keikkataukokin. Oikeastaan korona-aikana syntynyt albumi on pitkälti laulaja/lauluntekijä JP Jakosen omin voimin tekemä kokonaisuus, johon on vain napsittu tekijöitä eri puolilta maailmaa. Eikä pandemiamaailmassa ole todellakaan lennelty pitkin mantereita lentokoneella, vaan yhteistyö on tapahtunut netin ylitse. Se on sitä todellista vapaalentoa näinä päivinä.
Maailma on muuttunut parissa vuosikymmenessä runsain mitoin, mutta muutoksen tuulet eivät Cliff Barnesin musiikissa sen järisyttävämmin kuulu läpi. Ysärihenkinen indierock pörisee ja särisee kuin ennen, eikä esimerkiksi menopala Almost Had It ole niinkään kaukana edes 70-luvun säröisemmistä jutuista. Soundipuolella arvossa on lievä ruosteisuus ja likaisuus, joka on taatusti toisille herkkua – ja toisille myrkkyä.
Tarkoin harkittu ja sopivasti mitoitettu hygieniattomuus äänen puolella on kuitenkin mielestäni Cliff Barnesin suuri voimavara ja etu, sillä kaikista ysäriviitteistä huolimatta Jakonen taitaa kuulua ainakin tiettyyn pisteeseen saakka Neil Youngin seuraajiin. Samalla tehdään pesäeroa 90-luvun toiseen äärilaitaan, kun soundeja hinkattiin ja raitoja ladottiin ilman minkäänlaista tolkkua. Nyt rock tuntuu iholla, se puristuu hikikarpaloiksi niskaan ja saa sykkeen nousemaan kuin huomaamatta.
Runtun takana on kuitenkin enemmän laaksoja ja syvänteitä, kuin mitä ensivilkaisuilla arvaisikaan. Turn to Evil ottaa kaihoonsa kulmaa jopa puhaltimista ja alleviivaavasti isoilla kirjaimilla otsikoitu GONE uskaltaa hidastaa askellustaan ja antaa nuottien tipahdella raskaiden omenoiden tavoin alas. Eikä nopeakaan jolkotus tuota minkäänlaista ongelmaa, sillä ainoana kolmen minuutin haamurajan alittava Everyone You’ll Ever Know on malliesimerkki jouhevasta kitararockista.
Maailma muuttui, Cliff Barnes ei niinkään, eikä muutosta edes kaivattu näillä main. Free Flyin’ ei nouse rockin suurten albumeiden joukkoon, mutta se tuo takaisin jotain, jota ainakin itse huomasin kaivanneenikin."

Reposaarelainen JP Jakonen eksyi 5-vuotiaana Porin nuorisotalon kellariin katsomaan paikallisen Maddox-yhtyeen keikkaa. Isosiskon poikakaveri soitti yhtyeessä bassoa.

'Koronavuosina äänitetyllä levyllä on sellainen erikoisuus, että olen soittanut itse kaikki instrumentit lukuun ottamatta trumpettia, steel-kitaraa ja muita harvinaisempia juttuja. Niiden soittajat on tilattu netistä, ja muusikot ovat äänittäneet osuutensa kuka missäkin: Intiassa, Espanjassa, Briteissä, Yhdysvalloissa, Zimbabwessa ja Australiassa', kertoo biisintekijä ja kitaristilaulaja JP Jakonen.
Levyllä soittaa Farfisa-urkuja myös legendaarisen Luonteri Surf-yhtyeen Kalle Grotenfelt.
